The history of THE PLAYERS Championship and TPC Sawgrass has already kept a place of honor for the 2008 champion Sergio García. However, today Sergio has added another great moment to the history of the tournament by firing a stunning ace at the infamous island green of the TPC Sawgrass.
Curiously, Sergio has touched the glory on one of the most iconic holes in the world on a day that started anything but smooth. During the first third of the round Garcia had to cope with severe setbacks. "I started a little nervous. It was the first round after the victory at the Masters and I struggled to get into the game and find myself comfortable,“ he explained after round. After six holes Sergio was +4 for the day, but far from throwing the towel and he continued fighting. Even though he birdied the 10th hole, he missed a few chances along the way. He saved the best for last: birdie on 16, actually putting for eagle, followed by the hole-in-one on 17! A little more than 110 meters to the flag and a perfect gap wedge. Extraordinary. Sensational. For history. The ball drops close to the hole, advances a meter and goes into the hole with a slight movement to the right. Sweet. Precious. Within just two holes, Sergio had taken three shots off (+1 final) and, above all, has made his mark on Sawgrass's 17th hole.
With his round of 73 shots Garcia is positioned in the middle-rankings and inside the projected cut. However, this Friday he will have to make up some places to keep his chances for victory. He will tee off at 08.16 local time, 14.16 in Spain.
