Sergio finishes Jaidee to face Matt Kuchar on the second round

Play finally resumed after a 26-hours wait due to the snow that fell during a 12-hour period on Wednesday on the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club at Dove Mountain, Arizona. It wasn’t easy to deal with the slowly melting snow and on Thursday play was delayed five times from 4:30 p.m. (mainland Spain time) to 9:00 p.m.

Sergio returned to the 16th green to attempt a birdie putt to win the match, but his start was far from desired when he three-putted to lose the hole, leading Jaidee only by one. Then, they halved the seventeenth but the Thai player won the last regulation hole with a superb birdie a few seconds after Sergio saved a great par, sending the match to a sudden death.

The 19th hole was a cliffhanger and Jaidee had a good birdie chance, but could not make it and opened the door to the Spaniard. The man from Borriol played a textbook 2nd hole with a booming drive down the fairway, a great 3-wood onto the green and two putts, closing out the match with a birdie and getting a brilliant victory over an in-form Jaidee.

García will next meet the American Matt Kuchar, another tough opponent who got rid of the Japanese Hiroyuki Fujita. Second round matches will be held on Friday after the long delay on Thursday.
