Sergio to face Thongchai Jaidee in first round of WGC Accenture

Sergio García is on Ben Hogan bracket and this Wednesday will face Thai golfer Thongchai Jaidee, a tough-as-nails opponent in great form.

Jaidee, a 43 years-old veteran born in Lop Buri, is currently 55th on the World Ranking and have 18 career victories, 13 in Asia and 5 in Europe. He is the second Asian player in victories on the Asian Tour and the only man to win three Asian Tour Order of Merit titles. His last victory came at the ISPS Handa Wales Open last June, when he won by one from Thomas Bjorn, Gonzalo Fernández Castaño, Joost Luiten and Richard Sterne.

“Most of the world’s top 64 players are in this tournament, and there are no easy opponents. Besides, match play events are unpredictable; you could have a good day and still lose because your rival is better or just the opposite, winning although you are having a bad day because your fellow-competitor is worse”.

“Thongchai will be a tough customer. I know him well, he has a lot of experience, he is a winner and it is going to be a difficult match.  We’ve played a few times together lately (on the last round of Iskandar Johor Open, for instance) and he is in great form”.

“I’m playing well, trying to get back the good feelings with the putter. I love match play events and since we don’t play them very often I’m looking forward to them. You can only give your best and hope your opponent doesn’t have a great day”.

While Sergio García has had ten top-25 finishes in a row, Jaidee is currently enjoying a similar superb form and he already has eight top-10 and two third places in his last 14 tournaments (from 2012 Dunhill Links Championship up to now). Lately, Jaidee had one his best tournaments a couple of months ago at the Iskandar Johor Open, finishing in third place in the event won by Sergio García.

If Sergio manages to win the Thai golfer, he would face the winner of the Matt Kuchar vs Hiroyuki Fujita match. Other notables at Ben Hogan bracket are Louis Oosthuizen, Ernie Els, Keegan Bradley and Rory McIlroy.

Sergio would only meet Tiger Woods or another Spanish player (Rafa Cabrera Bello or Gonzalo Fernández Castaño) in the final match. The opening round match-up against Jaidee will begin at 7:25 a.m. local time (15:25 on mainland Spain) at The Golf Club at Dove Mountain (Marana, Arizona).
